My Solution
The Malaysian, Indonesian and Brunei governments need to enact and enforce laws to halt the destruction of the orang-utan habitat in Borneo and Sumatra and protect the remaining forest. This needs to occur by embracing the REDD program and promotion of orang-utan friendly forest products
Remember you will need to make 4 key arguments supported by evidence to back up your solution

You need to copy the exemplar above and enter information on your endangered animal

In Australia the three main states that have ghost bat roosting areas need to pursuade the government to help protect the ghost bat. They can do this by dedicating unused caves and mines for this bat whose population is rapidly decreasing. The mines and caves will also need to be closed off to avoid disturbing them and to stop other imported animals eating there prey.

Miss Stevenson: Alex - this is a great solution! Do you know who owns these caves? Are they owned by private residents eg farmers or companies e.g. miners?
Another good term to use rather than imported animals is introduced species

Although there are currently protected areas for the Maned Three Toed Sloth the numbers are still decreasing. I believe that the government needs to get more involved how? and they need to listen to what conservation groups have to say. This is essential for the survival of this sloth because clearly, even though they have taken some action by opening conservation parks the numbers are still dcreasing which means they are not doing enough.
Miss Stevenson: James - good start -but your claim is not specific enough - you need to explain exactly what the government needs to do ... Avoid using first person - that means no "I believe" ... you need to write as fact. Refer to my exemplar and read some of your classmates work (together with my comments) for further guidance.

My solution to stop the numbers of the hawksbill turtle decreasing are to stop introducing new species e.g. wild fauna and flora and native and non-native predators attacking the turtles. I shall also include that we humans are exploiting the turtles for there shells and commercial fishing are also killing them off. They are also losing there habitat due to degradation of there habitat and nesting habitats and that there should be a sign showing that this is the turtles habit area.
Miss Stevenson: Murray - good start -but your claim is not specific enough. For example, you need to explain who will be responsible for stopping introduced species and how should this be done. Who will stop illegal fishing and how can this be done? Who will stop habitat degradation and how will this be done? Who will erect the signs and enforce consequences of no compliance? Avoid using first person - that means no "I believe" ... you need to write as fact. Refer to my exemplar and read some of your classmates work (together with my comments) for further guidance.

The existance of the red wolf lies in the hands of the US government to enforce law on the illegal captures and
robberies which are happening in America. Communities who know that their are red wolves in their area should
send letters or somehow inform the government of the destruction of their habitat. Organizations already informed
and who are acting on this are the USFWS.
Miss Stevenson: Good work Alex! You have provided some good solutions - you now need to tie together your comments - they feel a little disjointed.

It is now stated that the Asian elephant numbers are still decreasing even though the, Asian Rhino and Elephant Action Strategy (AREAS) are working to keep the habitats free from poaching and the expantion of farmland into their native habitat. The asian forests have been dramatically affected by, logging and clearing of areas to create more farmland. AREAS, promises new hope to improve the population of the Asian Elephants.

Miss Stevenson: Andrew - good start -but your claim is not specific enough. How will AREAS keep the habitats free from poaching and farms from exanding? You need to come up with specific actions they will undertake and explain how this will be implemented. You also need to fire up your spell checker!

The QLD government is good at alerting people to why we need to save the cassowary, but they aren’t doing anything about it. One solution could be to stop loss and fragmentation to their habitat by creating more national parks. We could also create more breeding programs. Vehicle strikes have become a growing problem which could be reduced if fence are built next to the roads to stop them wondering onto the road and underground passage ways for cassowary so they can cross the road. These solutions could just save this species.

Miss Stevenson: George - there are some really good ideas here - so maybe over the QLD Government needs to implement a national plan that incorporates habitat protection, breeding and traffic management?

Dugong species are decreasing and although they are vulnerable something needs to be done. One solution is for the Austalian government to establish more protected zones in the bay where boats need to go slow look out for dugongs especially over seagrass beds. Another solution is for Governemts to enforce fines if a fishing boats are caught throwing their nets away in the ocean this resulting in the dugongs getting traped in them. Also the dugong is regularly being poached and the Government has helped with this problem by agreeing to list the dugong on (CITES) Conservation of International Trade in Endangered Species this company stops trade of the animal and products used from it.
Miss Stevenson: This is a good start Jack ... you now need to step back and think about who could be responsible for enforcing these 2 solutions. Is there a particular government department that could be responsible? Is this a Federal or State government issue or is it an international issue. If the latter - who would need to co-ordinate this effort and how could the implementation of these solutions be monitored?

Since 1930, when there were only 20 Siberian Tigers living in the world, their numbers have been slowly increasing. But even though there are 500 Siberian Tigers living in the wild their species are still endangered. Therefore I believe that the Russian government should allow the Siberian Tiger project more protected areas in South-east Russia. The government must also enforce that logging must be stopped for it is destroying the Siberian Tigers habitat. But the biggest threat to the Siberian Tiger is to stop poaching them for their body parts. Although laws have already been created to stop poaching, the government haven’t enforced it, which is what they must do to keep the Siberian Tiger alive.

The most effective way to help the white rhino population could be the same way about helping the black rhino, however the White Rhino also has to compete with the civil unrest more due to the habitat it lives in. The 2 most effective ways of fixing the current problem would be providing an alternative source of medicine in Asia and also reducing poverty in Africa and so stopping the human inhabitants from poaching the rhinos for survival.
Miss Stevenson: Euan - good start ... you need to explain your first comment about civil unrest in more detail. How do you provide an alternative source of medicine in Asia - this seems to be a bit of a vague statement ... It would be useful to have some evidence to back up this view. Your suggestion of reducing poverty in Africa is too broad - you need to identify some specific solutions to the white rhino .... keep researching and see if you can tighten up this solution with some specific plans of action that really target the white rhino. You also need to identify who will be responsbile for implementing your solution e.g. a government or an organisation

In order for the African elephants to sustain a safe population count, certain methods of conservation are needed to be enforced. Firstly, current laws against illegal hunting for the elephants' ivory tusk need to be emphasized. This can be achieved by harsher consequences and substantial fines. Also, rehabilitation areas and national parks should be created to enhance the safety and reproduction rate of the animals. Eco-tourism is the solution for the financial part of building centres, parks etc. and although eco-tourism has already begun, further methods such as advertising the importance of elephants, why they're being hunted and what the tourists can do to prevent any more destruction can strengthen the effectiveness of this program.

The Russian Government is getting actively involved in protecting the Amur Leopard alongside the WWF but still the Governments plan to go ahead with the Siberia-Pacific Oil Pipeline could spell disaster for the Amur Leopard. I believe the Government should deeply consider the continuation of the Pipeline project because it will destroy most of the remaining Amur Leopard habitat and therefore wipeout the species. Amur Leopards attack cattle when hunting for food. The farmers should be paid compensation for any cattle lost because of attacks by the Amur Leopard because that will stop them killing the Amur Leopards. Also a comprehensive education and awareness program set up by the government to educate the public and stop them killing the Amur Leopard.

Miss Stevenson: Sagnik - great start! It would be useful to identify which governments should be responsbile for protecting the Amur Leopard. Be careful to ensure that your solution is in the "third person". This means that you should avoid using terms like "I believe" or "I think". Apart from abandoning the Pipeline project - is there anything else that could be done to protect this specie?

There are too many feral cats and lots of foxes destroying the Eastern Barred Bandicoot and it should be stopped. One solution is to make a charity for a wildlife where only endagered species would be. Another solution is to build a fence so the it wont get hurt by its predators and will leave the bandicoots habitat untouched.

Miss Stevenson: Good start Vinay! I am not sure what your second sentence means - you need to have another look at this and reword it to explain yourself more clearly. The fence idea is good but where is the habitat and who owns this land? Is this a practical solution. If it is a national park it is probably ok ... but if this is privately owned you might run into a problem.

The National Recovery Plan needs to be in action and;
  • Reduced predator numbers at key reintroduction sites by either building predator proof fences or introduced to areas with not many predators
  • Ensure captive population continue to be manged effectively
  • Continue to monitor occurrence and trends of the Q.L.D, W.A, N.T Bilby so that the Bilbies can be introduced into those areas where the Bilbies are
  • Monitor trends in abundance of the Bilby at each reintroduction site this would help by knowing what type of land the Bilbies like

Miss Stevenson: Duguld - great start - I have put some questions in your table above for you to think about. You might want to identify who will be responsdbile for all these actions of the National Recovery Plan and see if you can answer the questions above.

To stop the illegal trade and poaching of the black rhino, as one, the small colonisations of people who live in the area, in Africa, must be educated of the crisis this giant is in. The Traditional Chinese Method, (TCM), to use the ivory horn of the rhino to cure the cough and related diseases must be replaced with a more abundant type of product. The horn of the rhino, as well as tiger products, is illegal now in the use of TCM but smuggling these products is heavily seen. As a result if the horn is passing through the borders, then the price of the horn should increase and the money collected, by the smugglers, must go towards the many projects, set to protect the rhino. The alternative of using the rhino horn in TCM is the buffalo horn. If the African government encourages the rhino poachers to kill the buffalo then they are at a win and so are the rhinos. While this is taking place, projects could be set out to make fenced areas, where any type of killing is a heavy fine, and breeding centres for this hook-lipped creature.
Miss Stevenson: Excellent Hari ... my only suggestion is to identify which authority would be responsbile for ensuring that these actions take place. You also need to double check that the above is in your own words - some of it sounds like it could be cut and paste?

  • Strengthen the motivation of private landowners (ranchers) towards Jaguar conservation based on the economic advantages of eco-tourism.

  • Promote new cattle management strategies to avoid jaguar hunting as solution to livestock losses.
  • Generate new opportunities for participation and benefits of local communities.
  • Promote the initiative to national and international mass media.
  • Promote the establishment of strong and long-term relationships among the landowners and with national and international NGOs interested in Jaguar conservation.

Miss Stevenson: Josh - great start - can you please be clearer on which American Governments your are referring to above. What types of trees need to be replanted and who will be responsible for this - is planting occuring on government owned land or private land? How do you pay ranchers not to shoot jaguars? I imagine this would be hard to police? You might want to rethink this part of your solution and identify some non violent ways to stop jaguars. You also need to tie all these points together with an "umbrella plan".

The Spanish and Portugal governments need to do the most work to save this species. The main solution is to increase rabbit numbers (the lynx' food) This can be do through breeding programs where the rabbits are released right into the lynx' habitat. Another solution is to ban construction in areas where the lynx population is present. If people do not comply there should be a very heavy fine, over US$500,000 (might seem like a lot but the population is critically endangered) The lynx has received protection from hunting but is still killed by traps set for other animals, so the last solution is to ban hunting of any animal that lives where the lynx do. This will ensure that the lynx' don't get caught in any traps. If all of these solutions are followed, the lynx' population will soon be increased and not be endangered.

The Bhutan; Chinese; Indian; Lao People's Democratic Republic; Myanmar; and Nepal governments should enforce forest destruction laws in their home country and in between them by paying local custodians to protect the Red Pandas. Also these governments should start forest and bamboo replantation programs in available land with the right requirements for bamboo. If there are areas that bamboo cannot be planted, loggers or farmers could use that area for their on crops. This could happen by encouraging villages near the habitat of the Red Pandas to protect the forest by paying them, providing them clean clothes, better shelter, etc. and/or better education. Also pressurizing the government by sending many complaints and starting protests would encourage them to take action such as doing the above.

======-Government claim land around the Heritage listed area for expanded habitat expansion======
The Government needs to help with the protection of the Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo. They have put up road signage but there are still road deaths, so more should be added. The numbers have only been surveyed by unofficial conservation groups, so I suggest that an official survey is done so there can be an accurate population estimate. The Government should try to also expand the world Heritage listed wetlands so the population can be expanse.

Although alot is being done to help the Condors there should be designated areas in the wild so they could live in peace and not be bothered by poachers. Vincent - where do you suggest?

It will also be helpful if the law designed to protect endangered species like the condor be more strictly and harsher punishments. More people should know about the condors and how they are critically endangered so more sites should be put up and people should go to schools and educate children about condors. Finally hunters who kill other animals should pick back their kills or the condors will eat them and the lead from the bullet will poison them or they should use a other kind of bullet with no lead in it at all such as

MRX Bullets or the Nosier eTip Nosier e Tip

The Queensland and Australian Governments need to invest more and money into the rehabilitation research which aims to provide another population or populations in other areas than Epping forest. By investing more money it can provide more staff to search for more habitats, and in testing them for suitability. Also this money can be spent to wipe out diseases and by paying staff for research they can be eliminated and the population, thrive. Money can also be used to buy appropriate land off farmers and install warning signs for the wombat population in the area.

Many varied solutions could be implemented to resolve the rapidly decreasing numbers of the Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombat but these would be unable to be funded and would be completely inconvenient, such as completely stopping any human contact with the species. Instead we should create easy to comply with economically sound solutions to this problem. The Goverment should implement fenced areas which are contained and restricted to only the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat. This would create a safe area in which would prevent wild animals from attacking them, farmers from killing them and probably their biggest threat would be the loggers. This system would prevent the loggers from destroying their habitat and allow them to live in a area in which they feel safe and free of constant threats. This would all be possible if these simple programs were put in place.

Although reintroduction of Arabian oryxs to the wild from zoos has been considered successful, much of the population is isolated from each other. Possible passages from one area to another could help raise the poplation, alongside new restrictions on hunting of the animal. The passages should be built by the governments of Saudi Arabia, Israel, Oman and Bahrain, where the animal has been reintroduced, and should work in conjuction with each other to build several national parks and replanting of native plants and food sources should occur to recreate the Arabian Oryx's habitat. Alongside this, new laws should be enforced by separate nations in operation with each other.

Miss Stevenson: Great idea Tom - you now need to identify who should be responsbile for this ,... which government or other body should re-establish these corridors . You might also want to think about where these corridors could be - and who currently owns this land. Do governments need to buyback land from individuals or companies or should areas by declared as national parks? Should replanting native species occur?

The Australian government and the premier of Tasmanian need to enforce laws against killing Tasmanian devils and provide predator and disease free areas for the Tasmanian Devils to live without interference of DFTD. This needs to occur by embracing the Disease Management Strategy and increase the locals awareness of the Devils, (especially farmers) so no more killings occur. More money could be raised by an adoption program of the Devils in captivity so that the people who adopt them could learn more about them and see them regulary. If killings do occur there would need to be a fine as well as they have their licenses taken away. If there are repeat offenders they should be given a strict fine.
Miss Stevenson: Well done Josh - have a think about how this solution could be monitored and what could be the consequences for people that continue to kill Devils. Can there be any more money directed into research into DFTD? Is there any cure to this disease and if so how could it be administered to the sick animals?
